Frequently Asked Questions

To install multiple Empress workstations, a few simple steps need to be followed to connect all the workstations to each other. It is assumed for this installation instruction that a network has been setup and is working correctly whereby files can be shared between the various computers.

Prerequisites

  • Functioning network
  • Empress Workstation setup completed (excluding Empress Master computer)

Empress requires the setup program to be run on each computer designated as an Empress Workstation to install the necessary run time files required for the program to operate. The Empress program itself will not be installed in this process. The program files are only required to be installed on the designated server computer which installs using the the Empress Master setup. Therefore the program files will NOT be installed onto the client workstation computers.

Empress is designed in this manner so that only one copy of the program is ever used by all workstations.

Empress Master Computer
To setup the Empress network, the designated Empress Server computer ( usually the fastest computer in the workgroup) should be selected. On the server computer, a directory share must be permitted to the Empress Program directory. This directory will be accessed by the other workstations to access the program files.

To create this share open Windows Explorer by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Explore . After Windows explorer has opened, select the directory (folder) where you installed the Empress program. This directory path is defaulted to “C:\Program Files\Empress Numbering System\ ”. Locate the folder and select the Empress Numbering System folder. Right Click on the folder menu and select Sharing and Security . A Windows prompt will appear as follows. If the Sharing command is not available, consult with your network administrator to confirm your network is setup to allow file sharing.

NOTE : If your sharing has a different view to that described, you may have a network with a greater level of access control. Consult with your network administrator to create a similar share with each client workstation/user given permission to access the shared directory.

NOTE: Computers running Win98, ME, NT4 or earlier cannot view share names longer than 12 characters. If these operating systems are used, shorten the share name to Empress

Empress Workstation
Locate your Empress Master computer on the network by using your Windows My Network Places shortcut from the start menu. If the shared folder is not listed, locate the computer directly by entering the computer name into the windows address bar. This is done in the format "\\EmpressServer" where EmpressServer denotes your server computer's name.

Once you have found the share name, double click to open the folder contents. Locate the Empress program (Fish Icon) and create a shortcut to your desktop for easy access. This shortcut may need to be applied for all users.

In many setup scenarios, the Empress Master computer and also be used as an Empress Workstation as well.
